Indonesian Rupiah Hits Record Weakness Near Rp17,833 Amid Global Uncertainty--
KORANPAGARALAMPOS.COM - The Indonesian rupiah plunged sharply against the United States dollar on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, marking one of the weakest performances in the currency’s history.
In spot market trading, the rupiah opened down by 37.50 points or 0.21 percent, touching Rp17,833 per US dollar.
The dramatic decline immediately triggered concern among investors, businesses, and the public as the national currency continued fluctuating between Rp17,812 and Rp17,827 during the midday trading session.
The weakening exchange rate has become a major topic in Indonesia’s financial market, especially because the rupiah has now broken through several important psychological levels over the past few weeks.
Since mid-May 2026, the currency has consistently recorded fresh lows after surpassing the Rp17,500 mark, highlighting increasing pressure on emerging Asian currencies.
Rupiah Suffers Worst Level in History
The latest trading session reflects how vulnerable the rupiah has become amid domestic seasonal demand and ongoing global uncertainty.
Compared to the previous closing level of Rp17,796 per US dollar, the new opening at Rp17,833 signaled strong selling pressure in the foreign exchange market.
Interestingly, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the strength of the dollar against major global currencies, actually weakened slightly by around 0.03 percent to 99.136.
This indicates that the rupiah’s decline was not mainly caused by broad dollar strength, but rather by internal and regional factors affecting Indonesia’s financial market.
Currency analysts noted that the rupiah’s weakness this week was largely driven by temporary domestic conditions, including the long national holiday surrounding Eid al-Adha.
During extended holidays, market liquidity often decreases, making it more difficult for authorities to stabilize exchange rate volatility.
Key Factors Behind the Rupiah Weakness
Several major factors are contributing to the current depreciation of the Indonesian rupiah.
